Oh Dear Donkey in Surabaya is a moody lounge and café shaped by dark stone, warm materials and soft amber lighting. Casambi wireless lighting control gives the team flexibility to fine-tune the atmosphere, from the softly lit seating corners to the glowing marble bar.
Tucked upstairs above Yokoo on Basuki Rahmat in Surabaya, Oh Dear Donkey is the kind of place where you can settle in and lose track of time. Part lounge, part café, it was designed as a hideaway from the noise of the city, with deep sofas, cosy corners, good coffee, burgers and mocktails.
The lighting sets the mood from the moment you step inside. Kept low and warm, it creates a relaxed atmosphere, with pockets of light bringing out the textures of the materials without making the space feel too bright. Dark stone flooring gives the interior a grounded feel, balanced by warm leather, timber and soft amber tones.
The service bar is a natural focal point. Topped with Verde Patricia marble, its deep forest-green colour adds richness and character to the room. Warm backlighting draws attention to the curved bar, picking up the stone’s natural detail and creating a gentle glow against the darker surroundings.
Across the space, light and shadow work together to give each corner its own feel. The contrast between the darker surfaces and warmer accents keeps the interior from feeling flat, while the softer lighting makes the seating areas feel comfortable and inviting. It is a space that looks good in photos, but feels just as suited to a long conversation over coffee or a mocktail.
