Palazzolo Institute – Don Gnocchi

The Palazzolo Institute in Milan was built in the 1930s to house elderly people who had been evicted from the city and later became the site of an important refuge during World War II. In 1998, the institute was acquired by the Don Gnocchi Foundation, which enhanced its healthcare and assistance services, including a nursing home, a rehabilitation center, and an elderly care facility.

Within this context, the new lighting project for the church, located inside the institute and accessible directly from the wards across three floors plus the ground floor, was developed. This unique feature of the space, with a series of balconies overlooking the hall and integrated into hospital activities, required a very flexible lighting design, both in terms of schedules and scenarios. The lighting had to accommodate various configurations: from liturgical functions to spaces for patient prayer, and to functional passage areas at different times of day and night. Additionally, several artworks depicting events of the Passion of Christ, including a series of paintings, were given dedicated spotlighting.

All these needs were addressed primarily using 230V tracks and projectors with different optics and power, managed individually through Casambi controls integrated into each adapter. The hall, approximately 20 meters high at the cornice level, is illuminated with high-power DALI LED projectors controlled via two separate lines, each managed by a SALVADOR 1016. This setup allows all electronic devices to be positioned in easily accessible locations for maintenance.

The combination of more than 200 homogeneous lighting units has enabled multiple spatial configurations, while remote control is ensured via a gateway.

The simplicity of the system allows the Church’s parish priest to fully manage the lighting scenarios independently. These scenarios range from ordinary Mass to solemn services, daytime functions, and nighttime settings. Some of the scenarios include timers that can be activated via buttons, smartphone, or tablet.
