This multi-storey family residence in South Mumbai is designed for a high-net-worth family who value minimalism, simplicity, and elegance. Situated directly opposite the Arabian Sea, the building benefits from abundant natural light and expansive views, which influenced the design of the lighting and automation systems.

Initially, automation was not part of the design, as the family had no prior experience with smart home systems and were cautious about introducing technology into the home. However, with thousands of lighting fixtures across multiple floors, manually controlling every light would have been cumbersome. Casambi was introduced as a wireless automation solution, offering simplicity, flexibility, and intuitive control for the entire home.

Lighting Design

The home features a minimalistic lighting concept, blending direct and indirect light through downlights, cove lighting, and customized fixtures including linear profiles and accent lights. Casambi enables the creation of tailored scenes for different activities, such as reading, parties, media, and relaxation. This allows the family to adjust the ambiance effortlessly while maintaining the home’s minimalist aesthetic.

Lighting Control and Automation

Casambi was chosen for its ease of installation and intuitive app interface. Being a true wireless system, it required no additional cabling, making it ideal for retrofitting automation into a large, pre-wired residence. Each floor has around 100 nodes, all working seamlessly through Casambi’s Bluetooth mesh network without a central controller.

The system integrates with voice assistants via a Logic Machine gateway, enabling control through Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri, alongside the Casambi app. Custom profiles were created for specialized fixtures, while sensors and controllers manage lighting, blinds, presence detection, daylight harvesting, and time-based automation.

Sustainability and Efficiency

With views of the Arabian Sea, daylighting scenes and automated blinds are used to optimize natural light, reduce glare, and minimize heat gain. This provides thermal and visual comfort, improves HVAC efficiency, and ensures energy is used responsibly.

Project Experience

The family and staff quickly mastered the system, enjoying effortless control of the lighting and blinds throughout the home. Casambi’s flexibility allows easy reconfiguration for new fixtures or scenes as needs evolve. Future plans include additional floors for a home theatre, pool, gym, spa, and party terrace, all ready to integrate seamlessly into the existing system.
