More than a pedestrian crossing, the Rhodes Waterside bridge has become a welcoming public space after dark. With Casambi wireless lighting control, dynamic lighting enhances the bridge’s architecture and public artwork while overcoming the challenges of minimal cabling and a complex rail environment.
The pedestrian bridge at Rhodes Waterside is something thousands of people cross every day. As part of a wider precinct upgrade, it was reimagined with new public artwork, refreshed finishes, and a lighting scheme that gives the bridge a completely different character once the sun goes down.
Instead of simply lighting the walkway, the new design brings the bridge to life after dark. Colour and movement work alongside the artwork and architecture, making what was once just a connection between two places feel like part of the destination itself. The result is a space that feels brighter, more welcoming, and more enjoyable to walk through in the evening.
Making that happen wasn’t straightforward. The bridge crosses a busy rail corridor, so the lighting system needed to perform reliably in a challenging environment. There were also strict weight limits, meaning additional control cabling had to be kept to an absolute minimum.
Casambi wireless control offered a practical way forward. Using a Bluetooth Low Energy mesh network, the lighting could be connected without extensive control wiring, helping reduce weight while making installation much simpler. The wireless network also delivered reliable communication across the bridge, despite the demanding conditions below.
With the system in place, lighting scenes can be updated easily as the space evolves. Whether highlighting the public artwork or introducing different colours for special occasions, the bridge can adapt without major changes to the installation.
It simply makes the journey across the bridge feel a little different. Safer, more inviting, and more memorable, it shows how thoughtful lighting and wireless control can turn an everyday piece of infrastructure into a space people genuinely enjoy using.
