Completed in 2023, the lobby of Kapal Api Group’s Office Building B in Jakarta is a striking combination of modern architecture, cultural inspiration, and thoughtful lighting design. The eight-story building features an inverted boat-shaped roof and draws influence from local Indonesian heritage. Its design complements the modernized Toraja-style roof of the adjacent Building A, creating a cohesive architectural identity across the campus.

Design Goals

The lobby was conceived as both a functional entrance and a dynamic focal point. Key design objectives included:

• Highlight architectural features without adding light clutter or glare into office spaces
• Seamless integration of lighting with the modern and culturally inspired design
• Flexible, easy-to-use control for facility staff
• Energy-efficient operation and minimal maintenance

Lighting Concept

The lighting strategy was designed to enhance both interior and exterior experiences without disrupting the architecture. Discrete LED strips were installed along randomly positioned windows on each floor, creating a “lighting outburst” effect on the facade that accentuates the building’s form. Inside, modular wooden fins define the atrium rhythm, while linear LED strips with angled reflectors provide seamless, even illumination. This approach was first tested on Building A and successfully replicated for Building B, with additional lighting added to highlight key architectural features efficiently and without high maintenance costs.

Casambi Lighting Control

Casambi’s wireless Bluetooth system powers the lobby lighting, providing a sustainable and intuitive control solution. Its flexibility allows staff to manage multiple zones effortlessly, adapting lighting to daily operations or special events. The wireless setup eliminates the need for extra cabling, preserving the lobby’s clean aesthetic and simplifying maintenance.
