M+ Museum

M+ Museum is one of Hong Kong’s most important cultural destinations, an architectural landmark on the Victoria Harbourfront and a centre for contemporary visual culture in Asia.

With its large galleries, diverse collections, and constantly changing exhibitions, the museum needs a lighting system that can adapt as quickly as its stories evolve. To achieve this, M+ uses Casambi’s wireless lighting control system alongside ERCO’s precision LED luminaires. Together, they create a flexible lighting environment that can be shaped and adjusted to suit every exhibition, artwork, and curatorial intention.

Lighting That Supports Curatorial Freedom

Every gallery at M+ has different needs. Some display light-sensitive works, others host large-scale installations, and many change multiple times a year. Casambi gives the museum full flexibility through simple, wireless control.

With the Casambi app, curators and technicians can:

  • adjust light levels to protect delicate materials
  • create lighting scenes that enhance specific stories or moods
  • make quick changes during installation without disruption
  • keep the lighting consistent across large, complex spaces

This means lighting becomes part of the curatorial process, not just illuminating the art, but shaping the way visitors experience it.

Scalable, Non-Intrusive, and Future-Ready

The M+ building covers 65,000 square metres, and exhibitions are constantly evolving. Casambi’s wireless system makes it easy to update or expand without major rewiring, helping to preserve both the architecture and installation schedules.

Maintenance is also smoother. Technicians can manage, adjust, or troubleshoot lighting directly from the app, even in areas that are difficult to access. This makes day-to-day operations more efficient and less disruptive for both staff and visitors.

Precision Light for Every Artwork

ERCO’s Parscan spotlights were chosen for their quality and versatility, and they pair seamlessly with Casambi control. Together, they provide consistent, controllable illumination across all gallery environments. From showcasing delicate archival material to the museum’s iconic collection of vintage neon signs, Casambi ensures each luminaire delivers the right light at the right moment.

A Lighting Environment That Evolves With M+

M+ is built on the idea of constant exploration, and its lighting follows the same principle. Galleries’ shift, exhibitions are reimagined, and new artworks are highlighted throughout the year. Casambi’s wireless flexibility, combined with ERCO’s high-quality illumination, allows the museum to adapt to these changes easily. Scenes can be updated, moods can be set, and conservation needs met, all without disrupting the architecture or visitor experience.

Light at M+ does more than illuminate; it shapes the journey. As visitors move through the museum, light subtly guides their attention, sets the mood, and supports the stories each exhibition wants to tell. In this way, lighting becomes an essential part of how contemporary visual culture is experienced, remembered, and felt.
