New Bahru Hall is a restored former school assembly hall that now serves as a flexible community venue for sports, performances, exhibitions, and cultural events. Preserving original architectural features while introducing layered lighting design, the space shifts naturally from bright daytime activity to warm evening atmospheres. With wireless control from Casambi, lighting scenes can adapt instantly to different uses without disrupting the hall’s historic character.

New Bahru Hall carries a long history. Once the assembly hall of Nan Chiau High School in the 1960s, it has been carefully restored and reimagined as a flexible community space at the heart of New Bahru. Today, it hosts everything from pickleball games and daily activity to performances, exhibitions, and cultural events, continuing its role as a place where people gather.

The approach by Open Studio was simple. Keep what matters, and let the building speak for itself. Original elements like the teak panelling, mosaic flooring, and distinctive ventilation blocks remain, giving the hall a sense of depth and memory that can still be felt today.

Light plays a big part in how the space comes alive. During the day, sunlight filters gently through the façade, creating a soft and changing atmosphere that feels open and natural. There is no need to overcomplicate it. The architecture and daylight do most of the work.

As evening sets in, the mood begins to shift. Layers of artificial light take over quietly, adding warmth and definition without overpowering the space. Custom pendant lights stretch across the ceiling in a clean, structured rhythm, providing enough brightness for activity while also setting the tone for more intimate events. Subtle lighting around the space brings out textures and details, giving the hall a sense of depth that evolves through the night.

Casambi wireless control enables the hall to adapt easily to its wide range of uses. Lighting scenes can be adjusted for different modes, from bright, functional settings for pickleball to softer, more controlled environments for performances and exhibitions. Changes are intuitive and immediate, allowing the space to shift without interruption or technical complexity.

The wireless system also preserves the integrity of the original structure. Without the need for extensive rewiring, lighting control is integrated discreetly, while still offering full flexibility for future adjustments as programming evolves.

New Bahru Hall shows how thoughtful restoration and flexible technology can work together. With Casambi providing quiet, responsive control, the space remains adaptable, atmospheric, and easy to manage, allowing each moment to be shaped by light.
