Suzuki is a fine dining Japanese restaurant in Singapore where architecture, nature, and cuisine converge to create a serene, immersive experience, designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma in his first commercial project in the city. The space features multiple internal gardens, natural materials, and refined craftsmanship, fostering calm, intimacy, and a connection to traditional Japanese design. Casambi wireless lighting subtly supports the atmosphere, adapting throughout the day to enhance the dining journey while minimizing environmental impact.

Suzuki is a fine dining Japanese restaurant where food, architecture, and nature come together to create a deeply immersive dining experience. Designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, this is his first commercial project in Singapore. Every element of the space is rooted in traditional Japanese design, inviting guests to slow down and be present from the moment they arrive.

The restaurant is organised around a tsubo-niwa, a small inner garden traditionally found in Japanese homes. This garden brings natural light and a quiet connection to nature into the dining space, offering a sense of calm and balance. An intricate bamboo ceiling and flowing screens frame the interior, combining natural materials with refined craftsmanship to create an elevated yet intimate atmosphere.

As guests enter, they are greeted by a nakaniwa, a small internal courtyard garden. The gentle sound of water from a bamboo kakehi flowing into an ancient stone basin creates a moment of pause, setting the tone for the dining journey ahead. Another garden sits just behind the reception counter, positioned between the counter seating and a private room. It serves as a meditative backdrop, and later in the evening, a quiet stage for the chefs as they work with focus and precision behind the counter.

Lighting is designed to support this sense of rhythm and calm. Above the garden, an artificial light panel mimics natural daylight, allowing the greenery to feel alive and present. As the day transitions into evening service, the light softens gradually, evoking the peaceful glow of twilight. The atmosphere becomes more intimate, drawing attention to the food, the craftsmanship, and the subtle beauty of the space.

The entire restaurant is controlled using Casambi wireless lighting control. From the exterior and reception to the dining areas, private rooms, and kitchen, all lighting is managed through one intuitive system. Carefully programmed scenes allow the lighting to adapt throughout the day, while remaining simple and reliable for daily operation.

Sustainability is woven into every detail of the project. Natural materials define the space, including bamboo for the open kitchen ceiling, teak flooring, and handmade washi paper for cabinetry and walls. The sushi counter is crafted from hinoki wood sourced from Nagano, chosen for the unique sensory harmony it creates within the space. Even the garden stones carry history, with fossilised leaves embedded within them. Casambi’s wireless system supports this approach by reducing cabling and construction impact, allowing the architecture and materials to remain uninterrupted.

Suzuki shows how technology can quietly enhance tradition. With Casambi, lighting becomes an invisible layer that supports atmosphere, respects craftsmanship, and allows a timeless Japanese dining experience to unfold naturally in a contemporary setting.
